THE Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry said there is sufficient food supply, including meat, in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration.
Deputy minister Ahmad Hamzah said the government move to allow the import of more than 12,000 heads of cattle also helps ensure domestic needs are met.
“(Supply) of sacrificial cattle is sufficient after we were given permission to import cattle from Thailand,” he told reporters in Putrajaya today.
The Veterinary Services Department last year suspended with immediate effect the imports of ruminants (cows and buffaloes) from Thailand after accessing the risk of lump skin disease in more than 41 provinces in the neighbouring country.
Following discussions, meetings and improvements to import rules and procedures, the department lifted the ban on March 15 this year.
Malaysia imported 12,405 heads of cattle from Thailand last year, in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration. – Bernama, June 18, 2022.
